Play Ode to Joy on Guitar

Beethoven's Ode to Joy is one of the most famous classical melodies of all time. It is a fantastic beginner melody to learn because it stays entirely within open fretboard positions when you play guitar online.

The Chords Needed

To strum the backing harmony for Ode to Joy, you only need to know two fundamental major chords:

  • G Major (G): The Root Chord
  • D Major (D): The Dominant Chord

Strum standard downstrokes on each beat (4/4 time). Transition back and forth between G Major and D Major to follow the melody.

Melody Notes (B & G Strings)

You can play the primary melody using just the B string (2nd) and G string (3rd). Play these fret numbers on our guitar online simulator:

Line 1:
B(0) B(0) B(1) B(3) B(3) B(1) B(0) G(2)
Line 2:
G(0) G(0) G(2) B(0) B(0) G(2) G(2)

Read left to right. E.g., B(3) means playing the B string on the 3rd fret. G(2) means the G string on the 2nd fret.
